All Eyes on APEC: Trump-Xi Talks Set for Thursday

All eyes are on the APEC summit in South Korea, where US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set for a crucial meeting on Thursday.
President Trump, speaking from Tokyo, set a high bar for expectations, calling it a “big meeting” and predicting it “is going to work out very well.”
This optimism is notable given the fresh outbreak of trade hostilities. The US has threatened 100% tariffs on Chinese goods from November 1, a move that followed China’s decision to control its rare earth exports.
The dispute has since spiraled, with new US port fees and Chinese countermeasures ending a recent period of quiet.
Trump, however, remained confident. He referred to the upcoming discussion as “fantastic” and said a positive result would be “great for everybody,” signaling he is seeking a truce.
