Nvidia Chooses Ownership Over Supply Contracts in New $30 Billion OpenAI Deal

by admin477351

There is a meaningful difference between investing in a company to sell it chips and investing in a company because you believe in its future. Nvidia’s latest move with OpenAI reflects that distinction clearly. A $30 billion equity investment — free of chip purchase obligations — signals that Nvidia is positioning itself as an investor in AI’s future, not just its present hardware needs.
OpenAI’s upcoming funding round is expected to total approximately $100 billion, with a resulting valuation of $730 billion. The round will reportedly include Amazon, SoftBank, and Microsoft alongside Nvidia, making it one of the most significant private capital events in recent years. The $730 billion figure would place OpenAI among the most valuable companies on earth, private or public.
The contrast with Nvidia’s previous OpenAI investment approach is instructive. Last September, the chip maker announced a $100 billion deal in which its capital would effectively be recycled through OpenAI’s chip orders. The arrangement generated enormous excitement and drove Nvidia’s market cap to unprecedented heights — but it was always more symbol than substance. When reports confirmed it was never binding, the deal dissolved and markets reacted negatively.
Since then, OpenAI has moved aggressively to diversify its chip supply chain, announcing partnerships with AMD and Broadcom. Those moves reduce its dependence on Nvidia and change the strategic calculus for the chip maker. Rather than investing to secure a customer, Nvidia is now investing to secure a stake in a company that has become one of the defining names of the AI era.
The challenges facing OpenAI are considerable and well-documented. ChatGPT’s market share has fallen sharply. Anthropic is winning enterprise contracts. Cash burn is high. Advertising experiments have drawn criticism. And multiple investors are still publicly hedging their commitments. Yet the $730 billion valuation reflects a persistent belief — shared by Nvidia — that OpenAI has a special and durable place in the future of AI.
