Hungary has struck a deal with the European Commission to unfreeze billions of euros in European Union funds, contingent on the implementation of several reforms. The agreement follows the Hungarian government’s efforts to address issues related to transparency, governance, and EU fund management. Measures outlined include reinforcing anti-corruption protocols, improving oversight systems, and joining the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged these steps by Hungary, which is set to receive substantial funding to bolster projects in infrastructure, energy security, housing, transportation, and business development. The funds, totaling €16.2 billion, as confirmed by Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, are expected to significantly contribute to Hungary’s economic development and investment strategies. Additional financial support may be granted as Hungary progresses with further reforms, particularly those concerning higher education and academic governance.
In tandem with the funding agreement, Hungarian students will fully rejoin the Erasmus exchange program starting the next academic year, enhancing educational opportunities and international collaboration. However, migration policy remains a contentious issue between Hungary and the EU. Magyar reiterated Hungary’s commitment to stringent border controls to manage illegal migration while fulfilling European obligations. He highlighted the necessity of safeguarding the EU’s external borders and clarified that Hungary has no intentions of setting up migrant camps within its territory.
This funding agreement represents a pivotal development in mending the strained relations between Hungary and the European Commission, which have been marred by prolonged disputes over governance, judicial reforms, and EU budget allocations. By addressing these concerns and implementing agreed-upon reforms, Hungary is set on a path to improve its rapport with the EU, potentially paving the way for smoother cooperation in the future.
