Greek PM Urges EU for Fiscal Flexibility Amid Rising Energy Costs

by admin477351

In response to the growing challenge of rising energy costs, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has expressed that the European Commission is open to considering Greece’s proposals for temporary fiscal flexibility. Following discussions with EU leaders in Brussels, Mitsotakis highlighted the need for targeted support measures to aid Greek households dealing with increased energy expenses and cost-of-living pressures.

Mitsotakis underscored his government’s commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline, emphasizing that while some flexibility is needed, Greece will not implement large-scale financial relief measures primarily aimed at securing political favor. Instead, the focus will remain on safeguarding the economic progress achieved since the country’s financial crisis.

The Greek government has already introduced subsidies to alleviate the burden of rising energy prices on households. However, Mitsotakis is seeking additional latitude from European institutions to enact further temporary and targeted support measures within Greece’s financial constraints.

Despite the European Commission’s receptiveness to these proposals, Mitsotakis cautioned against expecting significant financial relief from the European Union. He reiterated Greece’s strategy of addressing the energy crisis through affordable measures while exploring possibilities for enhanced support from European partners where feasible.
