The U20 World Wrestling Championships in Bratislava witnessed Hungary’s strong performance in Greco-Roman wrestling, as the nation secured three medals. László Koppány emerged as a standout athlete, clinching a silver medal in the 130kg category. His path to the final was marked by impressive victories over competitors from China, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Egypt. However, in the gold-medal match, Koppány faced a formidable opponent in Russia’s reigning world and European champion, Ali Ilyasov, who bested him 8–0.
In addition to Koppány’s silver, Hungary celebrated two bronze medal wins. Zalán Toplak, representing Ferencváros, excelled in the 77kg category. After entering the repechage rounds, Toplak secured his place on the podium with a decisive 10–2 win against Georgia’s Giorgi Gogelashvili. This accomplishment marked Toplak’s first medal at a World Championship level, underscoring his potential in the sport.
Another Hungarian, Petro Zsitovoz, demonstrated resilience in the 67kg category. Facing Egypt’s U23 world champion Mohamed Abdelrehim, Zsitovoz overcame an early setback to triumph 11–3 in the placement match, thereby earning a bronze medal. His performance highlighted his ability to recover and succeed under pressure, contributing to Hungary’s overall success at the event.
The championships commenced with the Greco-Roman wrestling discipline, where Hungary fielded a strong contingent of eight athletes as part of their 22-member team. The achievements of Koppány, Toplak, and Zsitovoz not only added to Hungary’s medal tally but also showcased the depth of talent in the nation’s wrestling program.
