Moscow has publicly rejected what it calls “illegal” pressure from the United States on India. On Tuesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that “trying to force countries to stop trading with Russia is illegal,” a direct condemnation of US President Donald Trump’s recent threats of revised tariffs against India.
Trump’s warning, which was made in a social media post, accused India of buying discounted Russian oil and then reselling it for a profit. He linked this trade to the Ukraine conflict and threatened to “substantially” raise tariffs on Indian goods, a measure that would follow the 25% tariffs already in effect on August 1.
The Indian government also issued a strong-worded statement from its Ministry of External Affairs. It accused the US and European Union of “unjustified and unreasonable” targeting and affirmed its commitment to protecting its “national interests and economic security,” a clear message that it will not be swayed by external pressure.
The combined pushback from Moscow and New Delhi highlights a growing resistance to US economic coercion. Both nations are asserting their right to make sovereign decisions regarding their trade and foreign policy. The situation reveals a new dynamic in global affairs, where emerging powers are increasingly willing to challenge the dictates of established superpowers.
