In a forthcoming change, Google plans to adjust how backups from Android devices are handled by counting them towards the free cloud storage quota provided with Google Accounts. Presently, when Android users back up their data—including SMS messages, call logs, device settings, and app data—this information does not impact the 15GB of complimentary storage shared among Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. The upcoming update will alter this arrangement by incorporating these backups into the overall storage calculation.
The policy change is anticipated to be implemented within the next few weeks. According to Google, the typical Android backup will occupy about an additional 40MB of storage space. This adjustment means users nearing their storage limits may need to manage their data more actively, either by deleting unused files or by subscribing to Google One for expanded storage options. Should an account’s storage capacity be fully utilized, automatic device backups will be temporarily suspended until more space is made available.
In conjunction with this modification, Google is also reportedly working on enhancing backup management features. These new controls are expected to offer users the ability to select which applications and types of data they wish to back up. By providing more granular control, users can optimize their backup sizes and better manage their cloud storage allocations.
