The recent state visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the strengthening of the comprehensive strategic partnership that has evolved between the two nations over many years. This relationship, characterized by cooperation in political, economic, energy, and cultural spheres, has been cultivated since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1972.

Since the inception of their diplomatic relations, the UAE and Germany have seen a significant broadening of their bilateral ties, notably in trade and investment. Last year, bilateral trade surpassed Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), positioning the UAE as Germany’s foremost trading partner within the Gulf region. The economic collaboration is bolstered by approximately 2,000 German companies operating in the UAE, including major corporations such as BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn.

Energy collaboration is a key component of their partnership, with the two countries engaging in joint efforts concerning renewable energy, climate action, decarbonization, and energy security. A landmark agreement was signed in 2022 to enhance energy security and industrial cooperation. This agreement includes provisions for the UAE to supply liquefied natural gas to Germany, alongside joint initiatives focused on clean energy and climate concerns.

The scope of UAE-German cooperation extends beyond just trade and energy sectors. It encompasses research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges, reflecting a multi-faceted partnership. The political connection between the two countries was formally elevated with a strategic partnership agreement in 2004, encompassing regional security, economic cooperation, and research.

Despite facing global political and economic challenges, the relationship between the UAE and Germany remains robust. Both nations are committed to expanding their collaboration across strategic sectors, ensuring that their partnership continues to thrive and adapt to changing global dynamics.
