Hungary-EU Tensions Unsettle Business Climate Amid Rule-of-Law Standoff

During a recent joint meeting of the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, members of Hungary’s FIDESZ–KDNP delegation voiced concerns over the European Commission’s silence on Hungary’s recent constitutional and political changes. The delegation, comprising MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László, highlighted that these changes could potentially weaken the country’s democratic institutions.

The Hungarian lawmakers urged the Commission to clarify its stance on several issues, including constitutional amendments, constraints on political competition, alterations affecting parliamentary mandates, and the independence of state bodies. They emphasized that the Commission had previously addressed rule-of-law issues in Hungary by withholding EU funds but has not yet commented on the latest developments.

Central to the delegation’s argument is the question of whether the recent constitutional amendments align with the democratic standards expected by the European Union. They expressed concern about the consistency of democratic principles being applied across all EU member states, underscoring the need for equal treatment.

Despite these pressing questions, representatives from the European Commission did not offer detailed responses during the hearing. The FIDESZ–KDNP delegation is seeking assurance that democratic principles are upheld uniformly throughout the EU, questioning the silence on Hungary’s political trajectory.
