Péter Szijjártó, the former Hungarian Foreign Minister, has announced his resignation from parliament to join the Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD in a prominent role. In a social media statement, Szijjártó expressed that he had accepted a “highly prestigious offer” from BYD, a company recognized globally as a leader in new-energy vehicles. He will step away from his political duties to focus on his new position, which involves managing external relations and spearheading the development of new business opportunities for the company.
BYD, which holds the title of the largest producer of new-energy vehicles worldwide, has been expanding its footprint in Hungary. The company is making significant investments in the region, notably with a large manufacturing facility being established in the city of Szeged. This project is one of Hungary’s most substantial economic investments and received backing from Szijjártó during his governmental tenure. BYD’s remarkable growth in the electric vehicle market is evidenced by its sales figures, having sold over 4.5 million vehicles globally, surpassing several of its major competitors.
Discussions about Szijjártó’s transition from politics to the private sector have been ongoing among Fidesz party officials, including Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, for several weeks. The party is now tasked with reorganizing its parliamentary group, with decisions on these changes anticipated in the coming days by the executive committee.
