Recent developments indicate a significant shift in the dynamics of business and technology collaboration between China and Germany. A newly released joint research report highlights a growing exchange of expertise and innovation between the two countries, moving beyond the traditional one-way flow from Germany to China. This report was presented during the China-Germany (China-Europe) Hidden Champions Forum 2026, which took place in Beijing’s Shunyi district and gathered over 400 executives and business representatives from both Europe and China.
The research reveals an increasing interest among European companies to expand their operations in China. Notably, around 38 percent of the European firms surveyed are planning to boost their research and development investments in the country. Additionally, 40 percent of these companies aim to grant their Chinese branches more operational autonomy from their headquarters in Germany, signaling a substantial shift in corporate strategies.
Meanwhile, Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers like Li Auto and NIO are making their mark in Germany by setting up research and design centers. This move underscores the intensifying technological collaboration between the two nations, highlighting a new era of mutual exchange and development in the automotive sector.
The forum also saw the inauguration of a public service station aimed at supporting businesses in overcoming technical trade barriers. In addition, a new partnership initiative was launched, encouraging German and European companies to engage with Beijing’s economic and technological cooperation zone in Shunyi. This initiative is expected to foster deeper economic ties and innovation exchanges.
According to Tang Wenhong, Beijing is committed to bolstering collaboration between Chinese and German enterprises. The city aims to attract more innovative companies, reinforcing its status as a global science and technology hub. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance economic cooperation and drive technological advancements in the region.
