Greece’s Economy Set to Outpace Eurozone Growth Despite Inflation Challenges

Greece’s economy is forecasted to outpace the eurozone’s average growth through 2028, highlighting a promising trajectory despite the challenges posed by rising inflation and high energy prices. According to the Bank of Greece, the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) is projected to increase by 2% in 2026, 1.9% in 2027, and again by 2% in 2028. This optimistic outlook contrasts with the broader eurozone, which faces more subdued growth expectations.

In the second quarter of 2026 alone, Greece’s economy expanded by 1.9% year-on-year, surpassing the eurozone’s growth rate of 1.2% for the same period. Key drivers of this growth include robust household consumption, investment, and exports. Specifically, private consumption witnessed a 1.7% rise, investment surged by 6.1%, and exports of goods and services grew by 2.2% compared to the previous year.

However, Greece faces significant challenges as imports have been increasing at a faster rate than exports, which could limit the positive impact of international trade on overall economic growth. To address this, strengthening domestic production and expanding export capacities remain crucial priorities for the country.

Inflation, particularly affecting energy and services, poses a threat to household purchasing power and could potentially impact Greece’s economic outlook in the coming years. Monitoring these inflationary pressures will be essential to sustaining the projected growth trajectory.
